WOW!!! I would question her and maybe think twice about buying stuff from her!! It is not necessary but the water will need to be treated for chlorine and other hard chemicals. RO water takes out 99% of the bad stuff and leaves you pure filtered water. Then I mix mine and get up to temperature and make sure all my cal, alk, PH, and Salinity is where they should be and it all mixes for a few days before I ever add water.
I can not believe a LFS just dumps tap water in her tanks. She must have tons of algae and un happy fish and corals. If I were you I would educate yourself and go in and slam her with cold hard facts and she what she has to say!!

Harris28 about waiting period have you seen any effect on tank conditions with or with out a waiting period.

Actually I have not seen a difference. I used to not wait a few days but rather make water add salt and pour in. I heard it is better to aerate for a few days to raise O2 levels but I have not seen a difference in the tank from the prior. So in theory it is better so I will stick with that
.. But I do feel better knowing that the temp and other parameters are the same so there is less shock in that aspect.

Depends on your location. Some people have well, spring or municipal water supplies that
are 'good' and can use them strainght out of the 'tap'. In my area I feel it is essential to use RO water. My LFS started and maintained my tanks with 'treated tap water'. When I took over maintenance I went to RO/DI water and feel that all the inverts did better....was it the water or just that my tanks were getting more established.....? I will never know, but I do not believe you can go wrong with RO water.

the only way to tell for sure is to test your tap water with a tds meter and if its really high then you should use a ro unit and if its real low then you could go without
