Use a GPS. Figure out what you want to see on the way beforehand, and map out your road trip accordingly. Have a list of cities/towns you want to stay overnight and look in advance at hotels/prices, etc. Give yourself plenty of time in case you want to stay longer at a place or two to sight-see.

Mapquest is a good tool. It depends on where you are in California and where you have to go in Georgia.

Man.. it's going to be fun!
Look up from google maps to see which route you will be taking then
google for all the land marks that's along the way.
For example,
Georgia - Georgia Aquarium
CNN
Coca Cola factory
Turner Field (if you are into baseball that is)
Famous restaurants and such. (I'm on a mission to go check out all the man vs food restaurants lol)

Make a list of all the things you might want to see along your way (Parks, tourist attractions, restaurants...) and plan your routes and hotel accomomdations accordingly using google maps or mapquest.
Something like an iPad or another tablet with a cellular connection and a GPS would be a GREAT tool to have on a trip like that as well.

Following I10 you might consider stops at the white sands New mexico (las cruces), and/or biloxi MS.
If you take I65 from mobile up to birmingham over to atlanta. Wave northward to me at huntsville, Al. LOL
I40 is a little bit the north route but some cities will have towns off the beaten path very similiar to the town in the original cars movie. Could look up wig wam motels. Think there is one on the historic places register. Big texan in amarillo is interesting. but not grand canyon interesting. LOL
just some rambling thoughts.

I'd be thinking about making a loop, south one way and north the other.
