rock setup

can I have a flat piece of rock with holes in it against the back of my tank, or is that just asking for dead spots??? I've got this neat piece of rock (not live) with a bunch of holes in it that would fit up against the background. I'm just not sure if that would work. I have the jbj deluxe 12 gallon, and I put in a maxijet 900 in place of the stock parts for water flow. Also, are there some kinds of rock not suitable for reef? I know some will grow corals and stuff better, but I just want to make sure there aren't kinds that will leach into the water. The lfs said it would work fine, but I'd prefer a second opinion since they couldn't tell me what kind of rock it is. It's a light colored rock and not grainy... I could post a pic in needed. Thanks for any input!

i wouldn't rest it up against the back, but it could just stand up in the background. as for dead spots i'm not sure, is the back of the jbj nano cube plastic? if it's the carved rock stuff that u can get at ***** or places like that then i have like 2 lbs of it in my tank and after a few months it becomes live rock.

a pic would help also where it came from... resting it on the back is not the best idea but it sounds like a perfect shape to make a table top with a cave underneath ;)

Ok, I moved it a little away from the back of the tank and put it at more of an angle... I had to move all my rock forward, and I liked how it looked before. I almost cried
but I think I'll get used to it. I also managed to stick my thumb on these cute little pink flowery things, so hopefully I didn't kill them all.
I didn't realize how traumatic moving rocks around could be.
I took some pictures but don't have the camera hooked up to the computer at the moment. If I get a chance I'll still post some for identification. After changing my rock layout I really hope the rock works in my tank or I'll be back to crying.

Ok, I see some of the cute little pink flowery things today, so happily I must not have wiped them all out. :) I really should try to identify those better, too. I've tried to take pictures but they're really small and they always turn out too blurry to really see. They seem to suck back in when it's dark and come blooming out in the light. :) Nice hitchhikers.
