RODI unit before or after water softener?

I have heard that I need to test my water and find out what I have present to determine where to place the RODI unit. I am looking for personal experiences and factual information.

Seems like you'd want to put it before the water softener.
Reason why is that RODI units use a lot of water... about 3-4 gallons for every one gallon they produce. That's a lot of load to place on a softener.

Yeah, an RO/DI unit is going to filter out anything a water softener is, so there's no reason to have the water pre-filtered before entering the RO/DI unit.

We ended up running another cold water line to the bathroom where the RODI unit is. That way we could bi-pass the softener. Installation took a couple hours, but the unit is up and running and I no longer have to purchase my water from the LFS!!
