RODI waste water

well i just got a RODI unit for christmas and aparrently it creates 4 gallons of waste water for every gallon of RODI. well instead of draining it i was wondering if the waste water is safe to use like in a washing machine or for rinsing dishes, etc. i dont like wasting that much water.
i was wondering if anyone knew what was in the waste water, i figured it was like super concentrated with whatever the RODI is rejecting but i really have no idea...

does anyone else reuse your waste water and what is safe to use it for?

thanks! alix

Except when freezing out, I run mine under the house and out to the plant and bushes along the house.

I have a friend who saves it in buckets and uses it for a couple things, mopping floors, watering plants, and flushing his toilet. he refills the back of his toilet manually with the buckets of ro waste water....... I think he's nuts and told him just to dump it in the bowl to flush but he prefers to fill the back of the toilet....
I personally send it back down the drain as I get charged sewage rates for all of it anyway. I'm actually looking to get a submeter put into my house so I only get charged what actually goes down the drain. I have so many pets that consume water plus tank evaporation I'm figuring I could save a lot of money on my sewage bill.

ummm i dont think the waste water is actually waste water...since all is it is the excess pressure that is being released, like on my filter guys ro/di unit, is has a Y an one goes to the pressure regulator and the other side is the "waste' water, so that regular stops the high pressure water from goin to your di since your di is a low pressure end, so the waste water is just RO water, its not waste...its just the excess pressure that the system cant handle. i dont know honestly but thats what i think of it as.....

LOL thats funny, but yea i really think its just a place for the extra water that isnt able to go through your DI to go to, because that flow restrictor or whatever its called is on the other side of the Y....

it will contain more minerals and chlorides than the water before it goes through due to concentration (it rejects stuff like magnesium chloride, copper, etc) and makes the water real soft (the good water). if you have public water it will still be lower than many wells and should cause no major harm. if you have a well you may want to be careful cause you have a softner system in your house to reduce the minerals but still need the thicker (L rather than M) copper pipes due to having more minerals than public water. if this is your situation water your plant or just drain it outside

we have well water but it is very clean & no softener everyone is amazed how good it tastes & no smell... but its still well water so would you still reccomend just draining it? would it cause any harm to use it for cleaning / flushing toilets / laundry?

OMG, your kidding right???????
Just kidding. Relax.
The excess is fine. No worse than what is going into it.
Looking at your pic, what is the extra blue line going up and hanging back down with the connector on it?

thats the tube you use if you only want RO water. (like if your going to drink it.) it loops around and gets cut off but then you can see thats the little faucet valve thing hanging down over the DI.

Very good. Is the water bad to drink after it goes through the DI?
I ask because I refill the water bottles at work with my RO/DI.

the waste water line is the black tube between the RO and the DI, the drinking water line is the blue tube that GrouperGenius was talking about, and the RODI line is the blue tube on the far right, coming out of the DI.
edit// BTW the red tube is the cold water line going into the unit.

i guess you arent supposed to drink a lot of deionized water because it is actually so pure that it will suck nutrients out of your body. ive seen RODI referred to as "hungry water" because of this.

no no i know what colors, and now i know where there from cause i was on the melevsreef site an he has detailed pics, an if you look at your unit you will see that the black waste water is just the water coming out of the flow restrictor according to the pics an descriptions on his site
