Royal Gramma Basslet

Hi All!

I just got my fist fish in my 36 gallon tank and it is a Royal Gramma Basslet. I acclimated it as I should and it went off into the live rock and hid. I tried to put food in there and he would not come out. I also read that garlic makes the fish have an appetite so I put a tiny sliver of it in and the Hermit Crabs went crazy for food but the RGB would not come out of the rock. I know he is alive because he pops his head out every once in awhile and darts back in. How long will it take for him to come out and actually swim? He is the only fish in the tank with 3 hermit crabs and a turbo snail .The only activity I have seen out of him is when a hermit crab was outside of the cave on the rock and the RGB started pecking at its shell. Is the behavior normal of this fish? Thanks!

Patience Grasshopper, the poor little fish just had it's whole world swapped out on from under her/him and s/he is pretty stressed. Lets hope the fish is healthy since you didn't quarantine. Most fish won't bother to eat the first day or so. As the fish realizes there is no threat it will venture out more and more. They are a shy fish, and stay in the rocks when stressed or felling threatened. Keeping the tank not too bright, and not getting close to the tank will help, your big giant face is pretty frightening to a fish.

Thanks! Today is Day 2 and he is eating just fine and he is ok with my face being by the tank and with movement outside of the tank. He comes out for 1-2 minute intervals

Hi,

See...s/he will get there. Eventually your being right up to the tank will mean feeding time, and s/he won't be a bit afraid anymore, at least until you add another fish.
