rust-like residue

After reading several messages I may have diagnosed my new tank's problem as diatoms. Just to be more specific, I would describe my residue as almost rust-like in appearance, maybe even slightly fuzzy. I have a piece of live rock thats almost complete covered with it and now it's starting to coat the crushed coral on the bottom. Does this sound like diatoms to you experts? This is my first salt water tank and would love any input. I've had 4 damsels in the tank for 3 weeks now and they seem to be doing fine.

Yes, this does sound like diatoms. While it's not very pretty to look at, you should not consider it a problem. It's a sign that your tank is maturing. Just clean as much as possible. Don't do any water changes as this will prolong your cycle. Just clean, clean, clean. One question though... What are you using for your water? RO, Tap, etc??
