Rye, camera question

Hey,
I'm leaving in a few weeks to go do my dissertation work in Peru and need a decent, but inexpensive digital camera. I'm on a tight budget, so I can't spend much more than $250. Also, I'm going to be in a remote area, and the likely hood that the project could get robbed in unfortunately high, so I don't want to drop a lot of money and then lose the camera. Anyways, do you have any recommendations?

If you are not going to be able to remove your pictures from the camera while you are on the road, I suggest you get something that uses inexpensive media. Compact flash seems to be the cheapest right now. And you buy several smaller memory cards. That way if the camera gets stolen, you will not lose everything.
Have you looked on ---- for something used? Another (often overlooked) place to find inexpensive camera equptment is a pawn shop. I've found some great deals in pawn shops.
Hope this helps.
