Safe Rock ?

Is Slate a safe rock to use in a reef tank? I am wondering about the chemical make-up of it.
Thanks

Good question, I've never seen anyone use it except for freshwater -- the only thing with slate though is it's not porous and that's what your looking for in saltwater.

I discourage the use of slate in saltwater. Mostly because it is just not a good reef material and can fracture. While it is porous, not quite in the same way as LR (which has pore spaces for worms and such to live in).
So in general I would steer clear of slates, granites, and such that are found in FW tanks.

i have one piece of slate rock in my frag tank. i agree its nto a great rock to use. and can get sharp edges on it which could potentionaly cause harm to fish. but i use it to grow some corals with mats on easier to peel the coral off and attatch to live rock at a later time.

Get the slate out of your tank ASAP, slate has metals in it and will eventualy kill everything.

Well what about the "Live Black Sand" on the market. It has a ton of Iron in it. All I have to do is run a magnet throught it and I pick up loads of it. How is that different? Iron is metal?
