would be easier if you had no sand, but...
take 5 gallon bucket, put a bunch of salt in and siphon out 5 gallons of water. stir till dissolved, dump back in tank. repeat until the salinity is where you want it.

Have your circulation going and add salt --- guess that's what I would do if its a new tank.
Just don't dump in excess -- let it circulate and test again later on... it's easier to add more than take some out.

when i first started my tank, i added salt directly into it and measure sg every 2 hours. no need to take the water out since all u hv r water and sand. as stated above, make sure to hv flow inside ur tank to help mix the salt.

First thing you should have is a Salinity Refractometer. Hydrometers SUCK and are nt accurate at all. Then you should check your salinity, if you low on salt just add 1 cup, mix it in with a power head, wait 30 minutes, and check your levels again. Remember the Key to this hobby is patience. If your salt level is too high, remove water from the tank and add fresh R.O. water unitll you get the desired salinity level. I keep my Salinity at 37.

Add 1 cup and check. if you need more salt just keep adding a cup untill you get your desired level. I use 2 1/2 cups for every 5 gallons of R.O. or You could dump a salt bag that makes 50 gallons and then add half of the second bag.
I use ocean pure salt. EPCOT / SEAWORLD will all tell you that salts are all the same (Just a different name brand for marketing). For the most part you still have to add trace elements in order to reach the desired levels.

Easy... Add your salt just like in a bucket. Test until the SG is at the right levels. Make sure to run a power head and heater to help mix it up. The power head won't disturb the sand anymore than a power head disturbs it when you have the tank up and running. It will create a nice current to keep the salt mixed and not settling.
