saltwater filters

I am fairly new to marine aquariums so i have some questions. The first one is: I have an Eheim 2224 canister filter that was going to be used for a 50 gal freshwater tank. I know that the wet/dry systems are the best but would this filter be suitable for a 50 gal saltwater tank?

again, this is just my opinion but canisters can trap excess food in the media chambers causing high(er) nitrates. i personally would not use one. i would go with a DSB and some LR and a skimmer.

ditto
canisters and wet/dry s
are great if you wish, if you want to grow nitrates(which is the last thing you want in you tank)
you however can use your filter for circulation and if you need to use carbon or such for chemical filtration; all you would need to do is not add any media
