How often would I need to change the water, and how much water would I need to change at a time, if I was using both AquaClear Power Filters 50 (200) and the AquaC Remora Series Protein Skimmers Pro Hang-On in a 50 to 55 gallon saltwater tank? As a total novice and a student, I'm trying to get the tank as low maintenance as possible -- even if that costs a bit more. Any pointers would be lovely! :)

Hello, and welcome to the site!

The more often you do a water change the less water you need to swap. Some people swap out a gallon or two a day. Some 10g a week...most do a once a month of about 3%. Example: I have a 90g tank, so I swap out 30g.

If you don't like doing too many water changes, look into the Aquaripure nitrate filter, or better yet keep macroalgae. If you don't have a sump system or refugium, you can put decorative macros right in the display...provided you don't have fish that will feed on your choice of macro.

Check out "Golf Coast Ecosystems" or google search "Aquaripure".

I just googled the Aquaripure filter and Gulf Coast Systems, and both look to be so promising and exactly what I was looking for! Thanks you so much!

On my last tank with a refugium I didn't do a water change for a year. Depends on you bioload or number of fish. In a fish only with live rock tank you can go with lower water changes.
I do water changes now to maintain calcium and trace minerals for coral growth. I do about five gallons a week.

make sure there is macro algae to balance out and stabilize the system. Usually in a refugium to protect the macros from macro eaters.
FWIW I never do a water change. I have had FW and marine tanks run for up to 9 years with no water changes.
On the salt tank I do dose cal/alk/mag though.
(water changes at levels convienent to hobbiest will limt but not prevent parameter drifts due to bioload.)
