I see a lot of discussion about what constitutes a deep sand bed (DSB), but can't find the benefits and/or detriments. What is the difference between a DSB and a regular (1-2 inch) one? Why would I want a DSB? :notsure:

A 4 to 6 inch sand bed allows for the completion of the nitrogen cycle. Bacteria that breaks down nitrate is only found in anaerobic locations.
As long as the top layers of the dsb are maintained,the entire nitrogen cycle is completed... no more nitrates...
I'll let you know how mine works out. Cycling the tank now.
