Sand depth for a reef system?

What is the standard depth for a reef?
I would do a search, but it seems to be broken!

Quick Response! So on a shallow, what is recommended? Will 1.5" be good or should I do 2"?

IMO 1/2" is the best shallow sand bed.

Yup if you are going to go shallow I agree with bang. Consider the nitrifying bacteria only reside in the top 1/8" of so of the bed. If we take that as truth then why have so much sand as to collect detritus underneath it?
