I am setting up a 240gal and am only going with a 1" bed if possible. I would love to have a deep sandbed, but have recently learned what can happen if not maintained well enough.

If you decided to go deeper than 2" you need to make sure you do lots of research and keep the right amount and kind of clean up crew to keep it healthy.

What are you planning on keeping in this tank?

I am transfering over from my 75 gallon:
Juvi Koran Angel
Yellow Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Dragon Goby
3 Blue/Green Chromis
Coral Banded Shrimp
Flame Angel (dont have him yet, but I will be putting in a QT shortly)
I dont have any corals yet, but plan on filling the tank up with them.
I also will be adding more fish, but I'm not sure what fish yet.
thanks

1-2". I am happy for you....upgrading is always fun

Many people go with remote deep sand beds to export nitrates as nitrogen gas. Deep is about 4 " and can be potentially a problem in a DT without proper maintenance.

i guess i'm going with the 1 inch SB. I dont need an extra workload with the DSB. I just want to get it right the first time when I transfer everything over. thanks

What size sand sugar, fine, or coarse
If you are not using the DSB method then the denser the thinner

I like a DSB if 3/5in my self but when this guy(Koran Angel) is a big boy he likes to eat corals JMO
And you can have a DSB in the sump/fuge with it's smaller size will not be as much work to keep up.

Yeah my Koran might be a problem with the corals. I'll have to get some acro's or something he doesnt like. Maybe I get lucky and he wont be a picker.
I didnt think about my fuge being a DSB. I could go that route also. Thanks for the idea.

Yes...sometimes sally lightfoot crabs get a little agressive and while I have not personally seen it I have heard that the emerald may pick at some corals if not well fed. I did not have either in my original clean up crews and have neither in any of my tanks at this time.
