Sand Preference

I am going to make the big CC to DSB switch in the next few weeks. I was thinking about going with black sand because my wife loves it and I think it looks spiffy as well. Does anyone have this in their tank? You don't really see alot of pics with it so if you got em please share. If anyone has any thoughts about the specific brand of sand I would love to hear them!

petsmart carries a black sand in 20 # bags, i too enjoy the look but have only seen it used once in a sw tank( at me dentist office) but it looks stunning and really sets off the fish.

Lenny, here is a thread I started a while back....a couple of people had made some postings to. There are also some issues some may have had/believe can happen with black sand. You can also go to the search link at the top and type in black sand...I have seen other photos on this site, and should be fairly easy to find....good luck.

I like the black sand also but on theone and only tank I used it in, after a period of time, it looked like a mix mash of junk as bits and pieces of live rock etc was always scattered on the surface as well as bits of coraline etc. It still looked decent, but not much really blends in with rubble eytc your going to acquire over time that always seems to windup on the surface. It did do a good job of hiding the discoloration from algae etc that is commonly seen between glass front edge and sand though.

I'm setting up my 180 with "dark gray" sand. I like the look. I plan on having a few gobies to keep the sand bed stirred up. This will get mixed in with the white LS from my 55 but it should look medium to dark gray when completed. It passed the vinegar test with flying colors so I'm not worried about buffering abilities. I've got about 60 pounds left over that I'm going to use in a fuge as soon as I can figure out a good design. I'll post some pictures some time this week now that I have the overflow and sump hooked up...
