Sand question

I have been looking at the choices of sand available..and I was wondering, what is better, fine sand or coarser types of sand? Also...I have seen some pink and also some black varieties available..are there any pros or cons to using one or the other?

I prefer good old white fine sand myself.

I think it looks better and is probably more beneficial for the critters that will inhabit it.

The oolitic (sugar sized) sand is best. Take a look at the individual grains and look at the shape - you want rounded grains (ocean sand is rounded due to the constant erosion from the water shaping the rocks). Sand that's been mined from a land based quarry will be jagged and less condusive to sandbed microfauna...
Above all else - getting life in the sand is the key.
