Not really, stars refered to as sand sifting are usually the type that spend most of there time under the surface of the sand feeding on debris and bacteria, serpent stars usually hide out in the rocks and are omnivorous scavengers, some are even predatory. Julian sprung has a pretty goo book out called Invertabrates, a quick reference guide, where you could get a pretty good idea of the diffrents stars. HTH

Sandy,
SWF.com sells both types - Like Adrian said sand sifting stars tend to dig into the substrate. Tehy also have tiny hairlike extensions on their limbs.
