sand storm

came home at 10:15 last nite with a nice new shroom rock and royal gramma.

my mj1200 suction cups failed and it slid down the glass about 3 inches (power cord kept it from hitting the sand).
needless to say, i had a slight sandstorm, and the front corner of my tank was almost bare bottomed. i moved the p/h back up, tightened the power cord incase the cups fail again. i also shifted some sand over to cover up the bare spot. i know i kicked up some nasties in doing this, but i didnt have much of a choice.
regardless, bta, green hammer, and shrooms were looking good this morning.
i didnt see my gramma, but thats ok. they are shy fish, and i'd rather him be happy under a rock then bugging out in the open.
just needed to vent. has this happened to anybody else?

Yup. About every two to three weeks have a pump drop. If anyone knows a way to stop from happening, sure would like to know.

happens all the time to me. i wish there was a saltwater safe double-sided tape to use instead. (are you here 3-M?) someday i'm going to take the time to find a supplier of suction cups so that i have a good supply, then i'll replace them every 3-4months or so.

Same thing happens to me. I am giving serious consideration to hard plumping all circulation from pumps in my sump. The one pump I do have in my sump now is hard plumbed out so that it enters the tank middle back down to about a foot off sand bed with a tee sending current to both back corners of the tank. Only problem is I will quickly exceed my overflow boxes capacity this way.
Probably will end up using sump type pumps submerged in main tank and hard plumbed in the same manner just have to decide on layout. At any rate I cant wait tell I can afford a couple of pumps and say good by to my PHs for good.

you know what might help you if you get two magnets. and glue one to the powerhead, and obviously the other goes on the outside of the tank like your trusty magfloat.
that should take care of that!

I've had my tank for about 9 months now, and i've never had a powerhead suctions fail. I have one that has four little suction cups, maybe that's the reason. I was also thinking that epoxy would help, but that's a great idea carshark!!!
:notsure: Wouldn't having just the magnets also allow the thing to slide down? The magfloats have velcrow, so they don't slide down the glass (that's not why they're there, but that's why it doesn't slide down the glass)... just a thought, maybe you should attach the magnets to the rough side of velcrow, to keep it from sliding down from the weight of the powerhead...

Ever used those magfloats? They don't slide down because they're really freakin' strong! Wet glass really has no friction coefficient, so the velcro isn't going to make a large enough difference to even really mention.
My only concern is that magnets strong enough to hold themselves to the glass really good, like the magfloat magnets, would interfere with any motors running in the powerhead or filter that you're putting them on.
