we just added some bags of sand and a top coating of live sand-
does the bags of sand now become live sand in the tank?:notsure:

it will over time (say 6 months or more)..IMO, it would be better if you added a hand full of sand from as many tanks as you can find. This will keep up the diversity of critters you should have in there.

thanks i know off one other salt water tank should i buy sand from other lfs?

its not like your in the middle of nowhere. I'd do some searches and find some local reefers that have DSB's
