Sand

In setting up my new tank, I used sugar sized aragonite for the first time. Usually I use slightly larger grain aragonite. Anyway, The tank seems to really cloud up when you move anything around unlike any of the tanks I have setup prior. I am guessing it's do to the sugar size stuff. Anyone have any luck clearing this up? It runs through some physical filters in the wet/dry but it seems to take forever (1 day+ to get uncloudy and even then it's not crystal clear) Thanks everyone.

It should clear up in another day or two, you might want to make sure you clean out your prefilter it could get cloged. Good Luck

I have been cleaning the prefilters every day recently just to get rid of the coral dust (I guess thats what it is). The problem is not with the flow either since I am running about 2900-3100 GPH. Any type of filters that totally remove this which I could run temporarily?? Thanks.

a good canister filter w/ fine enough floss filter material might work or w/ diatomtios earth added to capture smaller particles...however, if you are setting up a reef tank, the cloudy stuff is calcium will benefit/be used up by various reef critters or corals

I'm running sugar-sized aragonite sand also. You have to wash that sand REALLY good. Small amounts at a time. I also mixed it with Live Sand, placing most of aragonite to bottom as base, but still evenly mixed at the top. It should clear up within 24 hours at the most, other than that, it probably will need to be washed more, or just keep filtering water till it clears out fine particles. ;)

I would recommend Crystal Reef Sand. I bought 120lbs a year or two ago. It was amazing bright and really helped buffer my system. They can be found on eBay. Great company!
