I used quick crete playsand. I took a kitchen colander and got all the large grain particles out. The sand is a dark tannish color. It may not be the most attractive but if you filter the large crap out and get it to a fine concentrate it works great! BTW you can mix it some white aragonite and live sand to get a good natural sea color. My friend with a 2 yr old 100 gal reef has his set up like that, and i plan on doing the same. Just my .02
