So I guess a nano is different than a larger tank?

A sand bed works the same way, but your tank is much shorter and a 4 inch sand bed might look a bit strange. Your power heads are also much closer to the sand bed than they'd probably be in a larger tank. Mine varies between about .5" and 3.5" depending on where the flow and critters have moved the sand.

Ahhhh...good points lol. Guess it wouldn't look good 1/2 sand and 1/2 water
Thanks!

A LFS had a jawfish tank set up with about 5-6" of sand for a while. It actually looked really cool, but it makes the area above the sand even tinier and it is probably only a good idea if you have inhabitants that require that much sand depth. That is the beauty of a nano though. They are small enough to allow you to do species tanks without taking over your whole house :p
