sandbed questions

What is the benefit of having a deep sand bed?
Is it only good for those people who happen to like the look of deep sand or is there a benefit?
I have heard from some people that it helps to lower nitrate and ammonia and I have heard from others that a deep sandbed will cause nitrate. I have a pretty deep sand bed on both my 10 gal and 16 gal reef tanks and both have a little bit of nitrate and ammonia that I just can't seem to get rid of. could that be from the deep sand?
I have course grained sand in both tanks, could that be affecting it (because detritus can become trapped between the grains)?
I do hydroclean the sand once a week however, is that a good or bad thing?

Okay the key to deep sand beds is the anerobitc compound it makes and should lower nitrates. As for cleanind it i would do like a conch or something because stiring it up by cleaning will cause problems as you are experiencing.
