Can I put Sargassum in my refugium? I will have some LR rubble and instead of chaeto was thinking about sargassum. Im sure I still will need a light.

Im gonna bump this because I never did find anybody else that has tried it. I had put some in my fuge and I guess the lighting was not strong enough...it lasted a few months and slowly disintegrated. I did have lot of critters thriving in it for the time it was in the fuge. I have a swirly bulb in my fuge.

Where did you get the sargassum from? The reason I ask is because, when I lived on the Gulf Coast of Florida, I actualy set up a "local" tank with sand and sargassum. Kept a few file fish, local hermits, and a huge chunk of sargassum that I picked up offshore while fishing one day. The life on the sargassum was absolutely amazing. Tons of tiny shrimp, a few small crabs, and several sea spiders. The problem with sargussum that is floating is that it is typically already dying due to wave action and drying out, etc. I had to replace mine about every 2-3 months as it would begin to fall apart. Hope this helps.

Hello! I am trying to set up a refugium with just sargassum. No other tank or anything. I just want to maintain the sargassum. I will be getting my sargassum from the gulf stream live and bringing it back immediately. How did you have your tank set up. I've never had a fish tank or anything so please explain as simply as possible. Thank you! I would really appreciate some feedback!

I think the important thing is to get the Sargassum thriving then add the fish.

I do the same thing only I use caulerpa, chaeto, garcilaria and others.

To me it's important to find out what thrives in your tank then add the rest.

Bang Guy is right-on...you really need to see what species of macro "likes" your system.

FWIW, Sargassum tends to need pretty intense lighting, so if your fuge is "underlighted", it may not do so well. I understand it can also be a bit touchy...I have a friend who had it growing like crazy, moved his tank to another room, and he could never get it to grow well for him after that.

We run a lot of live macro, but I've never tried Sargassum personally...I do want to get some once we're ready for it in our 210 tho.
