We had movie day at work today and I chose Super 8 and was kind of dissapointed. Anyone else seen it yet? I would have chosen Transformers 3 because I have been thinking it might be the best of the three and the ones in the dept who did see it, said it was awesome. Movie prices sure suck these days!!

I had reviewed Super 8 over on my movie thread, I'll dig up the post here in a second.... I actually really liked it, the only movie so far I've ever given a 9 to.... I think I said it was just as good as E.T.... I think the only real reason more people don't attach themselves to the film more, was that the alien wasn't a cute little short guy like E.T. The only negatives I drew from the film, was that it sorta was confused on which direction it wanted to go. Sci-thriller, coming of age tale, etc. (that and the completely over the top train crash...)
But the strongest point was the acting. Typically child actors are the weak point of a film, but they all were terrific. They expressed a sense that they'd all been friends for long time, which you just don't see from young actors.
Not sure which what was the second option you were gonna see, Green Lantern or Cars 2, I was disappointed in both. Green Lantern was just okay, so generic, etc. Cars 2 was an attack on big oil/ethanol promotion tool....
However, yes, I CAN NOT wait to see Transformers 3 tomorrow (err later today). Huge fan, and the positive early reviews only have me more excited.

Super 8:
9 out of 10. Super 8 does get a super 8, A 9!!!
Realized I have not given out an 9 yet in any of my reviews (including previous threads, though I didn't review the original Hangover), and if any film so far deserved it, it was Super 8. The biggest thing is that you just get the whole package. A wonderful story, a heart-felt coming of age laced over top an alien invasion, with plenty of explosions, excellent CG, and what I was most impressed with, superb acting. All of these kids somehow turned out performances that topped many adults. Elle Fanning in this role completely outshined most of the roles of her older sister Dakota. The film has a have a few minor faults. First, indirect spoiler, but as a person that has a reasonable grasp on physics, the train crash sequence was a little too much. More so just the apparent speed the train cars were given. This wasn't no Japanese-bullet train. Second is another nerd-out, but some of the cars used post-date 1979 when the film was suppose to be set (all those International Buses). And that might lead to the biggest complaint, not being around myself then, but it sorta felt like in brief moments, I was watching a movie set today, modern mannerisms and such.
Overall, I was hugely impressed with this film. It's been touted as good as E.T. or the Goonies. I think it's better.

Some interesting points. I actually liked the alien and thought the kid acting was great. Not so sure how the doctor lived after going head on with a train and having his truck explode. LOL!. I also liked the sign showing pizza for 10 cents.
Where is your movie thread? Is it on this board?

Aside from the VERY unrealistic train crash (jack-knifing after hitting a pickup, and the driver surviving?) I thought I was pretty good. Far better than Cloverfield.

Haven't done a review of Cars 2 (7 out of 10) or Green Lantern (6 out of 10), but most of the films from this year are up.
**Spoilers**
As far as Doc and surviving the train crash, I think they left it up to interpretation. I personally thought after the alien had grabbed Doc and Doc had "seen what the alien seen" I sort of thought the alien had passed on some 'powers' or what have you to Doc (and the kid later on). That would explain two things,

As far as Cars 2 goes, I think the kids will like it but the adults have been telling me that they don't like the hidding big oil propeganda. I will have to wait to see for myself before really commenting.
