"Hi Can anyone shed any light on strange behaviour going on with my banded pipes? I have had them for over a year and they regularly breed but i have never tried to rear the young. Feeding well and are in with my seahorses. Never had any problem until two nights ago when i watched the female chasing the male and she ripped his tail and it was like they were sword fighting with there noses at each other. Not the normal breeding behaviour that they normally display. Soon afterwards i noticed the male carring the eggs under his belly but she was still pestering him. The strange thing is that only two days ago i put a blue night light on the tank and it seems that it is somehow linked. I turned off the blue night light and the aggression stopped immediately. The next light i plugged them back on just to see if it was just a fluke but as soon as i did the aggression started. Has anyone had any experiences of this happening to them. I am at a total loss to explain why this should happen."

Weird. I've never had banded pipes, so I have no idea. Maybe she has full moon issues...turns into a were-pipefish when she thinks the moon is out.

My thoughts as well. It definitely sounds like the behavior is tied to the moon cycles or disruption of somehow.
I would also wonder if it could be "normal" behavior previously unwitnessed as the pipes are pretty secretive. I know with mine, if I have the time to sit and watch them for extended periods of time, relax and start acting more normal, but if it's just me stopping by to look, we just tend to all stare at each other.
