another fish in your tank....
What would be the potential symptoms? And would there not be some sort of visible mark on the affected fish?

Ummmm, i dunno, i never had one of my fish get stung by my dwarf,, that i know of. HRRMM i think that would be the dumbest fish in the world,, the lionfish are not the quickest.

I was describing some recent "strange" behaviors of my wrasse to the girl at my lfs and the first question she had asked was if he was stung - before she even knew I had a lion fish. So I'm guessing that maybe his symptoms are similar to what theoretically would occur. He's starting to worry me a little bit - not acting "right" at all and I'm kind of concerned because without knowing what's going on with him I'm not sure if any of my other guys may be at risk for something at the moment. I know that because of the recent switch to closer quarters they are probably a bit "unhappy" at the moment....so I guess I *could* see the possibility, but still not sure that's the case.

My hawk has perched on my lion and didn't get stung. She was probably asking about a coral sting. What symptoms does the wrasse have? How is he acting?

Well yesterday he was darting back and forth across the tank, slamming himself into the glass, rocks, sand, whatever was in his path repeatedly. Today he was listless, hanging out in the bottom corner of one side of the tank only and only breathing from one gill. (lasted like this for several hours - I honestly thought with the way he "looked" that I was going to lose him :( ) Now, several hours later this evening it seems he is breathing from both gills again. He has still been eating through all of this. It's just not typical of him to act this way. He's always been fairly active, but nothing like slamming himself around and the one gill breathing really had me concerned. I'm just not sure what to think at this point.

What sized tank is this? What all is in it? How long have you had the wrasse? Have you added anything new?

Nothing new has been added - temporary close quarters for a few days now...probably a few more. Looks like I need to replace, cannot repair (actually could be repaired but would cost more than a replacement tank so financially speaking, cannot repair) - whole drawn out story and stock list here :

I'm sure that they are all quite perturbed by their current housing situation considering where they came from - even though they are not exactly on top of one another. However, my wrasse is one who was always very active and was always exploring all areas of the tank - obviously his swim room has been diminished some because of the situation. Could that be the problem???

Oh, and I've had the wrasse for just a few weeks. He was the last addition to the tank, and the cause of the temporary "situation".
I also want to add that I have studied him realllllly close to see if I can find any other problems. There is nothing notable. Eyes clear, coloration is excellent, no visible markings, scars, bites, burns....nothing that I can "see" wrong with him at all.
*ETA - Also I should mention there is no coral in my tank - very much a predator tank, so coral is not even an option unless I was looking for an expensive means in which for them to file their teeth lol.*
