Scaping

Just when I think I have this figured out - bam - bunch o' new questions. When arranging my rock - on a bed of 4" dsb - can the rock lean against the glass. I am concerned about scratching or worse. I know this is a silly q but sometimes its the little stuff that makes the big diff. I plan on supporting the taller pieces against other pieces to give it stability. also, does any one have any special tricks for scaping the lr. I have a plan now, just going slow so its done correctly the first and every time (I hope). Again, thanks to all. The advise here has been invaluable.

Thanks. Most of what you said I have considered. Most importantly I will make sure my lr is secured well. I appreciate your comments.

I have the rock wall look. I piled the rocks up against the back of the glass leaving a nice big open chanel in the back and down low for water flow. Also I have some decent sized openings for caves. I personal like the look.

Thanks Jarvis. Hey, question for you. Do you buy online, or at lfs. Was kind of wondering if you have to go to Mil or Chgo for decent lfs? I am always looking for new places. Thx.

I really dont like going mail order due to you dont get to see what your getting. I remember checking out some LFS in millwakee a few years ago and the prices were just astronomical. It accually scared me away from doing a reef tank. I havent went to check out any places in chicago area yet. A store right here in Kenosha opened up about a year and half ago. I talk with the owner on a regualar basis on what I want to get and swing by when the shipment arives. Most coral run me about 35buck if I buy them without them touching his tank. He gets some very healthy stock and good size pieces. I will buy peices from his diplay tank just to even things out because I buy all my equipment online.

Thanks Jarvis. There is a place near me. Prices arent too bad and they have a huge selection. The get a little cocky at times like their opinion is the only one that counts. Too bad its not located next to the Brat stop. I go there a lot on my way to Mil.

Oh I forgot. I have the same concerns about ordering online. But most folks seem to have received good stuff from swf and the price is significantly better.

Actually Fishy Buisness isnt that far from the brat stop. Just jump off on Highway 50 shoot all the way down to Sheridan road and find your way to the downtown area. I think it is on 56th street and 6th ave. What pet stores do you usally go to?

I am just starting my tank, but Scotts in Westchester (15 mins south of O'hare, get off at 22nd street) is a great store. Prices arent too bad, but they get a bit of attitude when your opinion is different than theirs. Good store tho. There is also one in Park Ridge, just a bit N of O,Hare, nuts I cant remember the name. If you are interested, I will look it up.
Nolofinwe - unfortunately the lr at the lfs is good stuff, but of course pricy. Thats why I want to oder some online.

I ordered all of my live rock online and it looked nicer than anything I ever saw in my lfs. They were the ones that actually turned me on to the place where I ordered mine.

another thing to consider when allowing rock to touch the glass--you will have a small area around that spot where you can't get your scraper--so you may have a dime or quarter size area that you can't clean well. Just another thought.

Also you make make a pvc structure and place your rocks all around it. Allowing a more stable structure and height as well. Also you can buy supports instead of making one. Good luck with what you decide.

hanks Ty. I probably would have done an OK job by myself, but so many folks have provided great tips. Thanks to all for helping me do this right.
