This really depends on your preference and pocketbook as long as you keep your water and light quality high anything should live. Bubble tip anemones (BTA) are a cheap and hardy choice. They are known to readily host many different species of clownfish the main thing to keep in mind is if you wish to host clowns buy the largest anemone you can find or afford. I would suggest an oral disc diameter of 4”+ for hosts anything smaller can be loved to death by its new occupants. Buy the smallest clowns you feel comfortable with they will grow into their host. Keep in mind mated pairs generally have a noticeable size difference (bigger=female).
Here are some frequently asked questions:
1)Q: My anemone has shrunk I think it is dying; it spewed a blob of mucus! A: Anemones expand and contract to exchange water in its column from time to time it also uses this to expel waste out of its mouth after digestion of some foods.
2)Q: Why won’t it stay where I want it? A: It is looking for a combination light current and substrate unfortunately this may not be where you want it (I’d just deal with it).
3)Q: My anemone started to move everywhere in my tank what’s up? A: It is unhappy for some reason check water quality, lighting or current change another possibility is predation (butterflyfish and bristleworms are some common predators)
4)Q: My anemone is looking extra slimy or listless the slime is everywhere not just spew from the oral disc. A: Your anemone is dead or dying remove it from your DT to a QT or the toilet it will probably smell horrible and it may cloud your tank. Water changes (vacuum any remains), protein skimming and activated charcoal will combat this problem.
ABOVE ALL: place coarse foam filter intake diffusers on every intake in your tank. You can find tons of people on these boards wanting to know what to do now that their Anemone is shredded on the intake grating or sucked into a pump (toilet time) after a roam around the tank.
