I would do a group of 5. If its a new tank odds are you end up with 3. they seem to like odd #s

It amazes me that people think there is an inch per gallon rule that actually can be applied generally. If you want a school of chromis, with a fuzzy dwarf, in a 55 then go with the 5. As mentioned, it will become a group of three.

Come to think of it, every time that I have 5, it ended up that two of them died. Heh, that's odd.
I think a tall reef with about 10+ chromis would look cool.
As to your question, I would put in at lease 3... but as mentioned, the lion might make a meal out of em'

I tried 6 (bought an extra in case one died) in my 150 and they always beat the one up so I put him in my 45 and he was better again and just got a fuzzy dwarf for the 45. I have not seen the chromis since

I started with five and ended up with one that I've had for over 3 years. There was an old thread on this site about how many of us out here had a school of chromis that actually lived any length of time.

Once the heiarchy is established they will pick each other off. It's not that they die off because they are a delicate fish (they are a damsel afterall), but they kill each other.
Have you looked at glass cardinals? They tend to stick together a lot more than other "schooling" fish.

I had two chromis and they would always hide, I would never see them. I then added a small russels lionfish and he made a meal out of one of the chromis in about a month. I took the lion back to the lfs, now we have one chromis and it is always out and about. I am going to get two more for my wife.
