Scooter Blenny

I just saw a scooter blenny in the lfs and thought that this would be a nice addition in my FO tank. I am trying to research and get some opinions on what other people think about this fish. Does anyone have or had one and what is his normal activity? The lfs guy said that he can live in a FO tank but to provide special food for him. The fish is not colorful but he I think he's interesting. What do you guys think?

I've got a Scooter Blenny in my reef tank. No, they aren't very colorful; actually they're pretty ugly. Mine stirs up the sand all the time. He is a riot to watch. Don't worry if ya can't find the little guy, they sleep under the sand. Hey, what fish do ya have in your fishh only tank!?!?

I have 2 yellow back damsels, 2 yellow tails, 2 percs, 1 banggai cardinal, and the cleaner wrasse. I don't have sand in my tank just the crush coral so if I get the scooter blenny do you think he might be happy?
Thanks

Hey Sammy, I don't think they're ugly... I think they're down right hideous. Now this may be something that is just in the eye of the beholder. But in my eye why would you want such a dull fish when you can have beautiful fish like tangs or angels or lions?
I got into Marine Hobby because I wanted cool fish not dull fish. I'm not sayin' any more because you guys would probably kill me.

I feel that the beautiful, and the bizare, make marine fishkeeping interesting.Sure I like the pretty fish. The Emperor angel,The clowns, and the lions. But I also think the Dogface puffer is equally beautiful,in some ways these "ugly" ones make a more interesting addition to any tank. STEVE

Very well put Mr. Salty. I too like the DogFace Puffer. Kinda ugly but an awsome fish to watch. Hey Mr. Salty, now that I know that you have an Emperor Angel could you tell me what size tank they need and what fish could survive with them. I've been looking into them for a while now.

I HAD an Emperor angel.I lost him to a very stubborn case of ich.Really Pissed me off.I payed $88 for him. As a juvi they are a very peaceful fish. They would get along with anything but another angel. As far as tank size,I'd think they would be cool in anything over a 40gallon.Untill they outgrow it,They do get rather large as an adult. I WILL have another one.STEVE

I would not recommend them for a fo tank because they like mandarins are dragonets and will starve to death over time. Unless you feed it through a tube the other fish in your tank will get most of the food before the scooter does. They are readily available like mandarins and many lfs will tell you they are easy to keep and they are if they get enough food and dont have to compete for it. It can take months for a fish to starve to death so many people who have had them for a little while think they are easy.

I LOVE my scooter blenny!!! I don't have sand he sleeps in a hole in my live rock. He doesn't need special food, just brine shrimp and blood worms or anything that you want and stuff off your rock, you just have to make sure that he can get to the food. I usually have to bury a cube in the substare so that he will be able to reach it since he rarely swims, so it is hard to get to the food. (But he does like to climb up the live rock and dive off!!) He is one of the most entertaining fish that I have in my display tank. I would definetly get one!

Hey Mr. Salty, heres my idea. I'm setting up a 70 gallon reef in a couple months. It will have a lot of different corals in it. I was planning on getting a 2 inch juvi. The tankmates will go into the rank in this order. First will be my six line wrasse, then a Royal Gramma, then a pair of percs, then a blue tang , then a Flame Hawk. After that I will either put in a Flame ANgel or an Emperor Angel. I'm also setting up a Fish only tank. DO you think that is too many fish in a 70 gallon tank?

lionfish,I dont think so.The only thing will be how much rock you put in there. They need room to swim, especially the tang.I'm not too sure about the Enperor picking at corals either.STEVE

Well with all that is said I think I will get the scooter. He seems interesting and probably be the main attraction due to the personality. I will also try the varied diet with all the fish and try to drop extra brine down to the bottom for the scooter.
Thanks all

Hey Dray,
Unfortunately, my lfs only has one blenny and it's mine now. The store is not that big but he will order anything I want. Your lucky to be able to get that many at one time. How big is your tank and how long have you had it?
