Hi,
I have two clarkii clowns besides a yellow tang and a tomato clown in my 55 gallon tank. One out of the two of my clarkii clowns had this big scratch on his side develop one day. Then is got bigger and bigger. Now it's like almost a gash in his side and it's all red and I am hoping it will just go away. I think the pet store where I got him had not done thier sceduled maintenance on thier tanks and this is where he got this from but on the other hand, the other clarkii I got the same day, from the same tank, is fine. Someone please help!! I have put a link to some pictures of the fish in this post (these are as of 9-29-02). I am going to post some new ones tomorrow when my tank lights turn back on (to show how much worse it got) Thanks for any help. Beth, I know you read these, maybe you can help. You once helped me out a lot during my first ick outbreak when I first got my tank last year. Thanks, Jeff

Hi I think you need to treat your fish with a antibiotic such as Erythomycin. I would recommend going to this site and do a little reading. www.chem~marin.com/fishdisease.htm
You can email Mr. Al Ciannelli he will email you very promptly and even have you call him. He is a great source of info who may beable to help you.
Good luck

Most likely the tang is causing this. He's swording the clowns. I would suggest isolating the tang. The clowns may not survive. Can you get them to a hospital tank so you can try to treat them?

Actually the tang and clowns get along fine. I just got the tang about a week ago and they are like best buds. Also, the clarkii has had this for about 3 weeks now, maybe 4. It's been getting progressively worse as time goes on and now is like a big red sore on his side from stripe to stripe. Oddly, though you would never know it because the clown acts normal, eats, swims, and even chases the other clowns sometimes. (knock on wood) Jeff

Are you sure that it isn't the tang or perhaps the other clown? Tangs are notorious for attacking other fish after the lights go out. You said the two clowns were in the same LFS tank? It's very possible that they're fighting when you're not looking. I've not yet had a fish that just started falling apart without something picking on it :)

I think what happened here is that it had some kind of bacterial infection and now it's almost like an open sore and I don't know how to treat it or what to do....if I can do anything...and I don't want him to die. It just seems to be getting worse and worse and I hate seeing him just waste away and get worse. The fish doesn't seem like its suffering though. I am going to turn my tank lights on and take some recent pictures. Maybe if I give him some vitamins in his food would that help or some kind of treatment into the water? I have several invertabrates so I'm not sure what I can do here. All I've ever dealt with is ick Jeff

This happened after you got the tang?
Don't be fooled by the appearance of the tang getting along with outers. Tangs are nortorious back stabbers! Literally!

Beth,
I just got the tang on Tues. The clown has had this condition for about 2-3 weeks. Besides, the clowns are bigger than my yellow tang. It's just a baby and doesn't seem very aggresive even though they are. They really don't go near each other. I had another one in the past with a different tank and that thing was a killer.
