Is it normal for fish to scratch against something every so often? I know it could be a sign of disease, but could it just be because they need to scratch or something?

what type of fish is it? Most of the time fish scratch against rocks or the bottom is due to paraistes. Do you notice any white or black spots on the fish?

Do you have any cleaner fish or cleaner shrimp? How often does the fish rub against something? Does is rub against smooth or course textured materials?

It's just every once in awhile. Maybe I catch a fish doing it every other day or so. I don't see any spots or other signs of disease. Anyone else notice this?

If there still eating normal,I wouldn't be too concerned. If they scratch more often and stop eating you might want to treat for parisites

Keep a close watch to make sure that the scratching is only once in awhile. A bit of scratching can be the first sign of a problem. Not to say that the problem won't go away on its own if the enviroment and fish care is good.
Just keep a eye on the situation.

Depends on the fish. My wrasses will scratch from time to time and I have had them for years with no problems. When my Royal Gramma scratches I know there is a problem. A Angel or Butterfly scratches probably a problem. Beth's advice is sound in this case watch them closely for a bit and let us know if it continues.

When I had some pH fluxuation problems, the slightest drop in pH caused by regal blue tang to scratch! If I saw that behavior the first thing I would do was to check my pH. He was better than an electronic monitor(lol)
My coris wrasse does not really scatch. He hits the sand for food and it can almost look like scratching.
As above, watch closily!
Good luck,
Connie
