Sea Cucumber climbing...

My sea cucumber that I just got from SWF.com climbed (crawled) up the glass and is now all the way at the top. I thought these ugly buggers are suppose to stay at the bottom? Is there something wrong with this one? :notsure:

What color is it?
There are two main types of cukes - sand sifters, and filter feeders. The filter feeders tend to climb to the top, so it is important to be sure that there is no mix up. While they may climb the glass, it is not all that frequent (I actually don't think mine have ever done that). So to be sure....

Bought this one off of this site listed as sand sifting cucumber and the colors and patter are very similar to an LMB. Any ideas? Sand sifting would tell me that he should be at the bottom, not at the top. How about this one, Ophiura. I have CC, not sand. Maybe he doens't like the CC?

Oh, can't go on crushed coral. Not good at all. Needs sand for sure. It actually ingests the sand particles. I would say the substrate may also be too rough for it in some ways.

Is it okay up there at the top of the tank? Can't really return it. What to do?? :notsure:

That sounds like a filter feeder though, not a sand sifter.

My sand sifter climbs the glass alot also. What I meant was, can a sand sifter survive like a filter feeder can? Doesn't it need the stuff from the sandbed?

Good Question, I would like to think that it is pulling more good food for itself from the cleaner water( but if it has a craving for poop it could just go to the bottom.)
Know but seriusly they will sift the sand when they feel they are'nt getting enough nutrients from the water itself.
or at least thats what I've read in several books.

If this is a sand sifter, it can not filter feed, and it will die.
I would either trade it locally to an LFS, or find a local reef club (most major areas have one) to get it into an appropriate tank.

Nope, there are major morphological differences in the tentacles. One is adapted to filter feed, one is adapted to sift sand. They dont really switch sides. If a filter feeder, it must get food from the water and you should be adding food. If it has gotten any smaller than when you got it, it is starving.
Sand sifters need to have access to sand.
I suppose they might get a bit from one or the other, but really, if it can't use its primary mode of feeding, it is in trouble.
