sea cucumber in trouble

I have a black sea cucumber in my reef tank. He has been happily in there for many months. Today he has a quarter sized chunk out of his skin. I don't think anyone attacked him, but I can't be sure. He is still grazing along the bottom as usual. My question is, do you think he'll recover or do you think he'll die and poison the tank? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
