Sea Hare!

We recently got a sea hare to handle the algae problem in our new tank... within about 48 hours the tank was spotless. We have been feeding him algae tablets now (whenever he comes out to play).
Does anyone else have a sea hare? Do you feed him anything else besides algae? Just wondering if he can eat other things because I get kind of nervous feeding him the algae. We only see him like once every 2-3 days, if that.

Welcome to the boards! I have never owned a sea hair befor but I think when they die, they release a toxin that kills everything in you tank.

nah, youre thinking of sea cucumbers. sea hares may be a little toxic, but i doubt they'd nuke, unless theyre in a nano.
what size tank? im thinking about getting one for when i set my 75 up. i hate algae! what all did it eat? just hair algae? what about cyano, diatoms, or bubble algae?

He didn't touch the red algae. We had to get some powder treatment to kill off that stuff - due for another dose this evening.
He ate the green hair algae on all the powerheads, heater, sides of the tank, etc.
My tank is 23 gals.

how does it hold up? do you have to have sponges over all the intakes like you would for a nudi? or is it strong enough that it can kepp itself out?

They will do dumb things, kind of like anemones will do. I have heard of may getting sucked up into power heads and filter intakes. If you have one you should hare proof your tank, just like we do with our anemones.
The ones my LFS had in were blue spotted hares, and they left EGGS everywhere. Very messy.
