Ive had my sea star for about 4 months or so, i thought he was doing well but ive noticed he has this whitish stuff on him. My sea star is a marble star/elegant sea star (fromia milleporella) I checked all my water levels and they are fine. My lfs said that they were a scavenger and will eat whatevers there and algea. Until now all that i feed my tank is pellots and brine shrimp. i checked in a book and it says it primarly feeds on sponges and may scavenge a bit. My question is which sponge should i get for my tank?? Do they need special lighting??? Or is there something else i can feed my sea star!!??!?!! :help: thanks for the help!!

Where is the whitish stuff? Arm ti[ps? Can you get a picture?
What are you specific tank parameters, including pH, alk and specific gravity?
How much LR do you have?
IMO, this is a star the feeds only on LR, and can not be spot fed. Nor, IMO, does it scavenge. You can not generally add sponges (it feeds more commonly on encrusting type sponges on LR). Many, if not most, IMO will starve within a year. But I am still waiting for more experience with them. Some individuals may take to spot feeding but this is not a common thing.

I'm with you.
And needing tank parms...and not just "everything is good"
What maybe good of fish or inverts may not be for a particular star species.
Also stability of the the Salinity is even more important as they use saltwater as blood...
