Seahorse Tank Flow

I've been assembling my 55 sump tank for my pony tank...and I noticed something I'd never seen in my display tank. This was the first time I've seen my Ehiem pro2(EP2) in action from above, it was a very grim scene. The water, especially the surface, was absolutely stagnant
I was using the same EP2 for my seahorse display tanks. So another key to my seahorses' demise has surfaced.
I was already planning to get a new filtration system, but now the EP2 is definitely history.

It has a spray bar...which I haven't put in yet, but it was the flow that really surprised me, this EP2 pumps 275 gallons per hour. But the tank's water condition certainly did not mirror that. It looked like I was using an air bubbler to move the water. The surface of the tank had that oily apperance~ even thought the return flow was pointed toward the surface. I have a large 300 gph submersible pump that I put in for contrast, it blasted the heck out of the surface water, not to mention the entire tank. I have noticed that the EP2 makes a little hiccup gurgling sound every 5-10 minutes. So the EP2 is destined for the garbage.
