i heard that seahorses are slow eaters but i was wondering if i could put one in my tank. i have a 40 gallon with two clowns, a mandrin, cleaner shrimp, and lots of crabs and snails. if it is possible how do you feed them so they get lots of food with out the other fish eating it first???????

I would say no. Wait for another response, but I think it wouldn't get any food.
And it might messup the mandarin. Is the mandarin eating prepared?

their main food is copepods, other than that, they also need a lot less flow that a regular tank, covered pumps/overflows/returns as to not get hurt/sucked up/spit out. It is best to have a dedicated seahorse tank, but if you are willing to put all the extras into your regular one, you could chance it, but also the clowns could kill them, and the madarin is in direct competition for their food.

There are some keepers that keep clowns with horses, though I wouldnt. They are very aggrsive eaters and can stress horses too much.
A horses main diet should be mysis shrimp. They do eat copepods though.
I am suprised you have a mandrine in such a small tank. They need a large population of pods and will soon starve in a small tank.
Horses should really be a species only fish. There are some gobies and blennys that are fine with them - read the compatability chart at the top of this forum.
Most crabs are a no no with horses also, and cleaner shrimp can also stress them out.

If you want seahorses, you should build your tank around them not try to fit them into the tank you have.

I have seen Mandarins kept in as small as 25 gallons. But the tank was very well established and had tons of LR.
I would say no to the horse though. As horses usually hunt for copepods all day.It may out compete your Mandarin for food.
I had a clown with my horses and he never bothered the horse. But each fish is different. The clowns do out compete for the seahorses food usually.
Like Teresa said if you want horses, they really do best in a quiet species only tank all to themselves.
