Using the FasTest nitrite test kit, the nitrite color should be clear if you have zero mg/l nitrite level.
Anything other than clear indicates some level of nitrite.
I use both the FasTest and SeaTest kits, and know it's hard to read at the very low end of the scale sometimes.
Try this if you want.
Next time you mix up some saltwater - test it for nitrites. Should be none if your freshwater source is good, and you use decent saltmix.
See what color it reads then. May help you in determining if your test kit is good, and allow for a true clear color for comparsion.
I would not test just your RO or tap water to do this comparison test though. I believe the FasTest kit is for saltwater only.
