I have a 46 gallon bow-front aquarium and I have one Penguin 400 I would strongly suggest a second filter or even upgrading to a Wet-Dry filter. Thats just my opinion, take it for what its worth.
See ya! :)

I think at this point, you would be better off getting rid of the CC substrate, and replacing it with a deep LIVE SAND bed.At least 4".Then adding alot more live rock. You should have around 1-1 1/2 lbs per gallon...This will build up your biosystem, and give your tank alot more stability in the long run...Maybe after this is done, you will find that the filter you now have IS good enough...The sand and rock will be doing all the bio filteration,,,the skimmer will be pulling out all the disolved organics and excess nutrients, and your penguin will only be a mechanical filter...

CC=Crushed Coral..I'm guessing that is what you have as a substrate since you said you don't have live sand...CC,with it's large chunks causes high nitrate readings by uneaten food and fish waste falling into the nooks and crannies it creats. This waste then breals down resulting in nitrate.A deep sand bed doesn't have these nooks and crannies,so waste and food sit's on top where the fish and inverts easily eat it.Also a DEEP sand bed contains special bacteria that actually convert nitrate to harmless nirogen gas. This compleats the nitrogen cycle....CC can't do that...Plus I think it really looks better, and more natural...And you don't have to vaccume it...Can you tell I LOVE SAND?????
