Hi all,
I will post the rest of my readings later on this afternoon but here is what i know now.
Salt-1.023
PH- 8.4
Temp- 81 F
Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- .05(almost zero)
Nitrate- 15
My dad bought a yellow tang last week without my knowledge. It was sickly looking when i saw it at the LFS. Too skinny, not really energetic. Well it died the first night. It had brown spots on it. I got a refund and got a new one. This one looked great, i saw it eat in the store, nice size, and looked happy. I adjusted as you are supposed to, adding water slowly then netting......
It eat last night and seemed well, but this AM it was died with those damn brown spots on it.
SO, what do these brown spots mean? I do have a grouper and he would open his mouth and kinda run into it. but not hard enough to cause a bruise. The size of the last tang was about 4 inches so my grouper could not eat it or even mouth it.
any help is great

Do not get another tang until you get rid of the grouper. Tangs, IMO, do not belong in a tank younger than 6 months. And indeed, you should have 0 nitrites. Always. Tangs are very delicate, and this (in addition to everything else that might stress them, including being in with an established grouper) might be a stress. How big is the grouper?
When I worked at an LFS, I am afraid you would have been put on 'tang probation.' There were folks who just did not have success with a series of tangs, and they were not allowed to buy anymore until the tank matured further. Some people are just never able to keep one, and learn the hard way.
If I were you, save your money, wait until the tank is older and you get rid of the grouper. Why can't you bring the grouper back to where you bought it?
You may wish to post in aggressives or in the trade forum that you are looking to get rid of this grouper. Maybe someone can help you out.

my nitrites might be zero but it is so hard to tell the color on those stupid charts. Can brown ich start that quick? like within hours?
my grouper is about 6-7 inches long. and the fish store doesnt want him back. I really really want to get rid of him so i will post in trade forum.

Just to add my .02... a healthy tank has 0.0 ammonia and nitrites, and low nitrates. Your tank is obviously cycling again (it probably wasn't finished). Don't add anything until you have 0.0 ammonia and nitrites and it's been that way for a few weeks. As far as the grouper, I believe all groupers to be of aggressive behavior and all usually grow quite large. I would get rid of it and rethink your fish choices. Buying fish to only have them die will only make you want to quit the hobby. Find out before you buy what fish will go with each other. Don't always trust your LFS either, many just want to make a quick sale or are too inexperienced to give good advice.

do you really think my tank is cycling again? My levels were at zero at one time when i added my first round of fish. What do i need to do to control or stop this from happining again.
I do clean out my filter on my overflow about every 2 weeks because it gets kind cloged with stuff. could that be it?

You can clean your filter but only use water taken out of your main tank, just syphon it into a bucket then swish it around. Do not rinse it under tap water. It takes about 30 minutes for beneficial bacteria to die then you have ammonia waste, no oxegen. (i do a water change a little at a time, shut down things that need cleaning one at a time but not all at once, water must be moving at all times, I always have a powerhead running) and dump it in the cleaning bucket. If I think it will take longer I use an airpump with diffuser in my RINSE bucket to keep things moving. It is very complicated but you get the idea. The brown spots are marine ich. Don't add anymore fish right now until all your water prameters are satisfactory. Your grouper is healthy but he still may harbor the parasite. Anytime a fish is stressed it is VERY suscetable to diseases, thus it passes it on, parasites take advantage of weakness. Good luck
