self rotating powerhead

Sure it would be good to have - if you want it.
Some sweep back and forth - ZooMeds - I don't care for them but others sure do.
What kind are you talking about ?

It's fine - but many people have complained that after awhile, they seem to get dirty and do not sweep so well. Mine do not sweep at all anymore, even after tearing them down for maintenance quite often, but they are a couple years old and I don't expect too much for what I paid for them.
Others here have stated that they have good luck with them. Might depend on if they are used in FO or reef tank .. not sure ?
They worked fine for awhile for me.

He is saying that zoomeds sweep back and forth.. not that zoomeds are bad.. just that he does not prefer sweeping powerheads.. well.. at least thats how I interpreted it. :D

i heard they get jammed up after a while. stuff can grow intside the mech and then it has too much resistance and stops working

Being a professional technician.. I have to say that you need to service them before they are broke... a little PM(preventative maintnence) never hurts.. I like the idea of a rotating PH.. but I think you would do just as good to put the PH behing a rock... this would vary the water flow.. your not going to simulate a lunar tide.. the least you can do is keep a constant variation.. and let the corals decide where they want to be. :D

whipple.. that sucks.. Im sorry to hear it.. but Im not very suprised.. but.. think about it. we all expect a company to design a part to run 24/7 with no error... and we want to pay less than $25 for it..my customers pay over $4million a tool and we wont give them a 24/7 contract.. so Im not suprised it failed so soon. especially with so many "cheap" mechanical parts..
yeah.. I think putting a rock infront of your PH is a good idea.. IMO you should have 3 pumps..
1st a circulation pump. from your sump to the tank
2nd a "gas pump" from the tank to the top of the water allowing for gas exchange..
3rd a circulation PH.. usually opposing the first 2 pumps allowing different water circulation. I would put this PH in the middle of a mound of rock.. then just let it flow wherever it wants to.. this way you can let your inhabitants decide where they want to be..
but on a side note.. I have seen a tank setup.. in the corpus christi aquarium.. (huge place) that used a large plank to stimulate lunar pull.. it simulted actual tides and was awesome to watch.. but it had about a 6" rip tide.. so it would be difficult to do.. but it looked amazing. :D

Speaking of power heads.... How do you guys have them positioned in your tank. I have 5 penquins ripplin the top of the water a zoo-med submerged half way down sweeping. I would be interested in how everyone else has theirs set up.

well, if/when they do stop;doesnt that just make them regular PH; I'm w/ Dal.; you get what you pay for;now there is this type of attachment you can put on some PH that few LFS may have;it's basically kind of T shaped w/ 2 open flattened ends at opposing sides; it tends to rotate 360 in fixed area when attached to the PH;BUT this piece of plastic usually runs about $50 a pop and difficult to find

sounds like you got it good enough.. When you feed does the food go everywhere in the tank?? look like a nice circular motion. IMO that's ideal.. maybe one spot with little circulation.. just inccase an inhabitant doesnt want high current.. but you sound like your fine.
