setting up hospital tank

Hey there I Had a 10g hospital tank set up in my basement and it was just about cycled. Well my darn dog knocked it over and it broke. I have 2 fish coming probally tomorow. I have another 10g that I can use. Since I only have 1 day to work with can I do this. Take a couple pounds of LR from my show tank and put it in the 10g with no substrate a heater and a ph? Will that handle the filtration for the 3 - 4 weeks I hypo my new fish? Also if I do this having the water at 1.009 will not hurt my rock right?

That low of a salinity level will kill that LR. Id take some water out of your showtank and put into your QT if your worrried about it being cycled IMO. Youll deffinatly want to acclimate the fish to that low of a level. Put them in the QT tank then slowly over a few days drop the level to 1.009 Then after that slowly bring the salinity back up to what the showtank level is.

If fish and inverts can live in the lower gravity why can't the bacteria on the rocks live in it?

Fish can if you acclimate them correctly and slowly. Inverts I believe can not handel a low salinity level. Maybe a shark will jump in if Im missing something. Iv just started a QT tank for hyposalinity and it is a lengthy process.

The inverts are just a lot more sensitive to lower salinity levels. Fish are just tougher when it comes to salinity (most of the time) But all the stuff on the LR will not live so take water from your main tank then there would be not as much of a cycle. You should bring the salinity level down in a 48 hour time period then leave it at 1.009 for at least 2 weeks before bringing the salinity slowing back up, also keep an eye on your Ph, it can fluctuate a lot in low salinty.
