Setting up Q tank need help

I'm setting up a 55 gal. Q tank. What i need to know is do i have to put in LS or LR, and whats the best way to cycle it, should i keep fish in it at all times. I'm new at this so have a lot of ?

I just did this 2 days ago---I did a water change from the main tank and put into the QT tank and then I sucked up some LS from the main tank and added that to the QT tank, instant cycled tank (as far as I know and from what I was told). I only put a little Ls in there, and no LR just PVC pipes to hide in, because any treatment will kill the LR, but my LS may pay the price, that may not of been a good choice but it is done and running with fish in it now. HTH
