Make a five gallon bucket of water that is mixed at the right specific gravity - 1.021 to 1.023 is fine. Then, pour half of the water into the empty tank. Put the sand into the tank. Fill the rest of the tank up with the water you made up at the proper salt level. Then, put your live rock in. All happening within an hour.
Do not put any damsels into your tank during your cycle period.

Excuse me!? I work at the best fish store in the Southeastern PA area. In fact, I do set-up tanks for customers of mine, as well. The method that I just told him was better, and everyone on this message board (well, I guess except for a few, obviously) know that it is inhumane, superfluous, and unhealthy to cycle a tank with damsels.
You are the same person feeding your lion and sharks feeder fish and goldfish. Wow, you know how to take care of a fish.

Everyone has different ways and no one is better than another. Get your facts straight kid. When setting up the tank you can do one of two things. You can put the sand right in with the water and add a piece of shrimp to cycle it. Another way is to cycle the sand seperatly. This is what I did and the cycle in the tank was much faster and the sand settled in a couple hours. All you have to do is put your sand in buckets or containers with saltwater and add some flake food or shrimp and cure the sand. I let it sit for a couple of weeks. You can add the rock whenever you want. Keep in mind though if adding before the sand settles it will settle on the rocks. Live rock will also help with the cycle. Damsels are not needed to cycle and most people want them out afterwards anyways. Oh and you can mix the salt right in the tank if there is no livestock in it.

Danielfish: Congratulations on you new aquisition. You're walking into a wonderful hobby. I really admire your intentions on starting a aquarium the correct way. I hope that you have realized that the smaller the tank is but more diffcult it is to maintain. Though with the correct information will make it much easier to maintain it.
To everyone else: People be civil and please do not bash nor put down each other in the forum. This hobby has enough fustrations with the maintanence of their aquariums without having people yelling at each other.
Danielfish: In order to get you tank setup they is a variety of ways to do it. Whether it's the ways Joushua G or Lion_crazz mention are just one of the few ways to do it. There is no absolute way to set one up. I could possibly mention another 10 different ways to setup a tank. But the would be rather point less.
The way that Lion_crazz mentioned is on of the most humane way to cycle a tank. And you won't be introducing an agressive fish that later may stress, injury, or kill other fish that you may get. All you need to introduce into the tank is some form of decaying matter to help n the cycling of the tank. Be it in the form of cocktail shrimps or fish bits or squid. Anyone of the items mention will get a tank cycled.
My presonal preference would be make some water that would be enough to fill the tank. Place half the water you have the in tank and keep the rest in the container you prepared the water with the liverock you have. Place the sand in the tank. Placement via a PVC pipe will minimize the amount of sand stirred up into the water.
Allow a few hours to pass and most of the sand that was stirred up to settle. Then place the liverock and the rest of the water carefully so not to stir up the sand.
Place the shrimp or what ever else you want into the tank. And their you go.
OR
You can place the sand and liverock in and fill the tank. Then when the sand settles clean off the liverock with some moving water. Turkey baster, powerhead, hands they all work fine.
Then place you shrimp as mentioned above.
NOW People if you're not going to contribute with anything constructive and you're going to be closed minded and intolerant to other peoples beliefs. DON'T POST ANYTHING ON THIS BOARD.
I'm getting tired of seeing ignorant fellows slandering other people based of superficial information and arrogance.
