sharing an RO/DI

A friend and I were wondering if we could share an RO/DI unit that hooks up by a hose connector. You know, hand it off to each other once a week. But we've heard it's a problem if the membrane dries out. Is this true? Has anyone else ever tried this??

Why don't one of you hook it up and run it and the other just comes over and picks up water as needed...??

As the other guy here, we are trying to come up with a way to produce quality RO/DI water, with out the expense of a quality filter system. We figured that if we shared the coast and use of the system, it would be better. We could permanently hook it up at one guys house, but the other guy would still have to lug around buckets and drive to get water. I would rather carry one box of equipment to my buddy’s house than have to lug buckets back and fourth. If I'm going to have to lug around buckets, then I might as well continue to go to my LFS which by the way isn’t very local….
Also, can anyone clear up the question on the memebrane? Does it need to stay wet once used?? :notsure:

The membrane would be fine moving it from one house to the next..... They are talking about extended periods of it being dry.... Your talking max 1/2 hr trip to other guys house and back to yours hook it up and make water.... Should be fine!!!!!!!

My filters stay full of water so unless you dump out the water im not sure how it would empty. Dont forget though it full of water isnt light either. You guys may want to look at the auction site and contact the vendor they might cut you a deal for two of em. I only paid 100 bucks for my di/ro unit and it has worked perfectly.

I think its only like .25-.30 cents/gallon. The problem is, its 30 min away. My buddy and I live in the same town only a few blocks away from each other. 5 min trip max

Yep, basicly the "drying out" refers to unhooking the unit and letting it sit for an extended period of time...moveing it back and forth week to week shouldn't be a problem...
You could always plumb in some "valves" on input and outlet to "trap" water inside during transport...to keep membrane wet and prevent "leakage" in your car...
