Shark/Ray Combo

I keep them both... but not in the same tank. It would be an interesting relationship however. Probably wouldn't work out the best considering rays are much larger than bamboo sharks are. Unless you had like a 400 gallon tank with lots of surface area rather than depth.

Jim, I was reading about a blue spotted ray this weekend that grows (according to the article) to a maximum of about 10 inches and they said single speces were suitable for 75 Gal tanks, 2 in a 100 Gal. I was thinking 1 possibly 2 bamboo sharks and 1 ray in a 300 Gal tank.
What's your opinion on a setup like this?
Thanks,
Brent

Yeah you could do that. Just be really cautious with blue spotted rays. They are generally for the more advanced hobbiest. They can die from simple salinity and temperature fluctuations. Obviously the smaller the tank they more confined he is and the easier these things could happen. The nice thing about them is they are pretty friendly and will eat from your hand.
A friend of mine had a blue spotted die in his 800 gallon while he was adding water to his tank to counter the evaporation. The salinity got too low and it died within hours.

Thanks for the info Jim,
things are really in a very basic planning stage right now. I'll make sure that part of my design includes an NURCE type topoff system to keep the levels right on.
On a diffrent note, I was just in the cities last weekend, do you ever let hobbiest have a look at your tanks? I'd love to see them and just chat about your experience some Saturday in the future, if your so inclined of course.
Thanks for your input,
Brent

Diatom: Yea that's no problem. I am usually around on weekends unless I am out of town doing business. Since if you stay over the weekends you can save yourself quite a bit in airfare. I got of a lot of stuff coming up soon however. Have to rewire and redo the networks in the Naval bases across the country. Then I have to help some friends locally setup new offices for their expanding business. So right now it's just a shot in the dark.
