shark tank/pond

so ive been reading about sharks. i have two reef tanks.
but i was wondering since i cant afford a huge glass aquarium is it possible to get a big container like a 400 fish pond or horse tank or something in an extra room we have in the basement. if i had filtration and lights and all is it possible?

Well - it certainly possible to buy or build your own shark pond.
One option is to buy a preformed "poly" pond - which you can usually get thru your LFS Home/Garden Or Livestock store. Which is usually a round "fish safe" pond that's roughly 6-9' in diameter. Which is roughly 350-950 gallons - and make excellent small habitats for small benthic shark species such as bamboos, Epaulettes or coral catsharks. This is the cheapest option as one of these ponds -generally costs about 1/5 what a similar size glass aquarium would cost.
The 2nd option is build your own pond. Which has more benefits since you can customize the pond which ever way you want it. Be it with or without a viewing window. and make it what ever size you want. Naturally it may cost more than the preformed ponds - especially if your looking to add a viewing window.
The size & dimensions of the pond will ultimately dictate what kinds of sharks or rays you can keep. But for a well design pond - that roughly 400-1,000 gallons - your looking at the following species of sharks or rays.
Sharks
-Bamboos (Chiloscyllium) -ie Brown-banded (C. punctatum), White-spotted (C. plagiosum), or Gray (C. griseum)
-Epaulettes (Hemiscyllium) - ie Common Eppie (H. ocellatum)
-Horn Sharks (Heterodontus) - ie Californian Horn(H. francisci)
-Coral catsharks (Atelomycterus) - ie Coral (A. marmoratus), Marbled (A. macleayi)
Rays
- Round rays (Urobatis) - ie California stingray (U. halleri), & Cortez (U. maculatus)
Just a few species to consider.

are you talking about building a wooden frame and lining it with ply wood then a poly pond liner ? That would work too .

Filtration depends on a lot of different things . Basically what does the tank look like when its done . Whats in it fish rocks sand plants ? all of that kinda thing .

Well a strong wooden frame, with plywood and poly pond liner(double thickness) would be good for a small shark pond.
As for filtration system for a shark pond - here's what I suggest.
A biological Filtration system - with Live sand, Live rock, Miracle Mudd, & Macro-Algae(chaeto). Also add a good quality Protein skimmer, possible even a sand filter would help.

you might be able to get away with out a sump but thats going to requier a lot of work . Your going to basicly have to set the tank up like a giant refug . Your going to have to pack in the LR and have a good bed of LS . Set up a corner with plants to help to filter the water . You'll also be doing water changes more frequently .YOur still going to need to run a skimmer and some kind of mechanical filtration , Such as canister filters . Again though it will largely depend on what kind of shark you wish to keep in there .

oh i see... i could maybe do that. im planning on buying a r/o water filter thing so i dont always have to go out and buy bottles. and i have a canister filter laying around that im not using. i have a skimmer. not very big so thinking about getting a better one.. also thinknig about buying like one of those 1000 gallon laguna filter to add onwith filtration

cheeto and other forms of alage . Naturaly ocuring stuff.
That filter is not going to be anywhere near enough turn over for a pond the size your needing . YOu want at least 10 x times turn over in the system . That filter was rated to 2000gph thats only good for about a 200 gallon tank . Believe me your not going to get away cheap if you wanna do this right . Two of those would be closer to what you need , Plus your going to need some kind of closed loop system that just moves water around .
